What Are the Library Badges?
The CWI Library Information Literacy Badging Program exists to help you learn about the critical services and resources the Library makes available to you at CWI, and to help you build or expand your skills in locating, evaluating, and using information in your class assignments.
NOTE: Library Basics #1-3 are the three badges aligned to the CWI101 course and the ones students are required to earn as part of their coursework.
Where Can I Access Them?
Badges are located in the "myCommons" course, which you should be automatically enrolled in. If you do not see that on your course list, please submit a HelpDesk ticket get that course added to your Canvas.
In My Commons, you will see "CWI Library Badges" listed about halfway down the page (badge groups are listed alphabetically).
What Will I Learn?
Our Library badges cover the following information:
- Get a tour of the physical Library and an orientation to our website by completing the "Welcome to CWI Library" Badge (Library Basics #1).
- Learn how to think about and prepare for college research in the "The Research Process" Badge (Library Basics #2).
- Find out how to effectively search for books and articles from the Library when you walk through the "Starting Your Research" Badge (Library Basics #3).
How Do I Earn Them?
You earn each badge by scoring 80% or higher on each badge's quiz. The quizzes allow you multiple attempts, so stick with it and review the content as needed!
How Do I Prove That I've Earned Them?
When you've earned an 80% or more on a badge's quiz, you'll see a small green check mark appear to the right of the badge name in the MyCommons course. If you've failed to earn 80% on a badge quiz you'll see a small red circle/line in the same place until you retake the quiz and earn 80%.
After you earn all three of Library Basics #1-3, and see the green check marks for them, scroll down to the module immediately below the CWI Library Badges module and you'll see the Your Library Badge Certificate module. (This will not open for you until you complete and pass Library Basics #1-3.) Click on the Library Badge Certificate assignment and your digital badge will display as in the example below. Take a screenshot of this badge and submit it to your course following your professor's instructions.
Screenshot Instructions
Now you can:
- Take a screenshot using the built-in tools for Windows or Mac (additional instructions below)
- Save that image as a file (It's good practice to name that screenshot so it's easy to find later, probably something with your name and "library badge". This will make them easier for you to find if an instructor in another class asks you to show that you've completed them.)
- Upload it to your CWI101 or other course or submit it however your professor wants you to share your proof of completion.
How to take a screen shot:
- You can take a screenshot on Windows by using the Snipping Tool. (To find it, first press the Windows key, then search for snipping tool.) Here's an article with more details: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots-00246869-1843-655f-f220-97299b865f6b
-
You can take a screenshot on Mac by using the Screenshot app. (To find it, first click on the magnifying glass icon to bring up search, then search for Screenshot. You can do it even faster by simultaneously pressing these three keys: shift + command + 5 .) Here's an article with more details: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361

If the above options don't work and you have a smart phone, you can just take a photo of your computer screen and send that.
